Fibroids and Infertility - Is There a Connection?

By Olivia Hall

Fibroids can be very common in women, but generally are not even discovered unless there are symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms are abnormal bleeding, painful menstruation or bloating. These fibroids are non cancerous (benign) and generally form on the uterus. Depending on the location of these fibroids, there may be no direct connection between these fibroids and infertility. If they are very small and in a location that does not interfere directly with the function of the uterus, they won't have any impact on reproduction at all.
If, however, the fibroids are large and located on the inside of the uterus, they can be linked to fertility issues or miscarriages. There are three main types of fibroids, they are:
• Subserosal - fibroids located on the outside wall of the uterus; • Intramural - fibroids found inside the wall of the uterus - usually removal is required by laparotomy; • Submucous - fibroids that bulge into the uterus, pressing inwards.
Your medical practitioner can examine your uterus to determine if there are any procedures that need to be undertaken - depending upon the location of the fibroids and how they affect the uterus. The location of the fibroid is very important in determining whether or not it needs to be removed. Most often, removal of fibroids and infertility treatment are undertaken at the same time.
A laparotomy (incision through the abdomen) is the most effective and non invasive surgical procedure for the treatment of this condition. This technique is often used, because incisions are relatively small and there is less risk that they will rupture during a pregnancy. If a larger incision is required to remove any fibroid(s), it may be that a C-section will be required for delivery to relieve the pressure on the uterus.
It is important for the uterine cavity to be as close as possible to normal before any IVF procedure is undertaken, because it is believed that fibroids can reduce the chances of success of IVF procedures.
Many women do not even know that they have fibroids because they are in a location that does not directly cause any symptoms. An MRI can determine the size and location of the fibroids, as well as what course of treatment is required to deal with them. It is important to discuss with your medical professional your concerns regarding fibroids and infertility and to decide upon a course of treatment with a view to you having a successful pregnancy.
The main drawback to IVF is that the treatment can be expensive; and there are certain fertility treatment side effects.
