When a couple is ready to try for a baby, it can happen immediately, or it can take several months. Sometimes there are issues that are unknown at the time, and it is generally at this point when each partner should have an overall health check to determine if there are any factors preventing them from conceiving. It could be that the male partner has an issue, and there are several causes of infertility in men.
1. Issues with sperm
One of the main causes of infertility in men often originates with sperm count or motility. A fertility specialist may be able to assist in increasing sperm counts; however motility (movement of sperm) can be difficult to rectify. A fertility specialist can extract sperm, use a process called "washing" and use IVF to impregnate the female partner if viable sperm specimens are located.
2. Deficiencies with Hormones
Hormone deficiencies can be treated with certain medications. A complete blood culture work up may be required to determine if there is a hormone deficiency and this will also point to a specific course of treatment.
3. Varicocele ligation
This is an abnormality within the spermatic cord. This is something which requires surgical intervention for correction.
4. Vasectomy
If a man has undergone the procedure to disconnect the vas deferens (vasectomy), there is little or no chance that he will be fertile. In some cases, the procedure can be reversed; however, it is an expensive process.
Clomiphene citrate (Clomid) has been used successfully on men with certain sperm abnormalities. It has been proven, in certain cases, to increase sperm count and motility. It is not the "magic pill", though, because studies have been undertaken, wherein some men were given Clomid while others were not. The pregnancy rates for both groups were about the same.
If the male partner has mild to moderate low sperm counts, IVF or artificial insemination can be two very good options. In this way, the most viable sperm are extracted and used, increasing the chances of a resulting pregnancy. There are quite a few options available, but a fertility specialist will have all of the information regarding the specific procedures.
There are many causes of infertility in men, and several options to correct the problems. It is important to get all of the information possible and then come to an informed decision once you know what the options are. Removing "roadblocks" to pregnancy is possible, you just need to be determined and patient.
